In Burundi there’s a high risk of children dropping out of school. Research from the government has shown that one of the leading causes of dropping out is due to hunger. Adolescents are often looking for a short term solution and drop out of school to earn money. The government takes this problem very seriously and stimulates adolescents to finish their education

The Mwana na Mama foundation noticed the same trend in their schools and set up a lunch programme to stimulate adolescents to stay in school. The lunch also helps the children concentrate and function well in school.

In 2019, a school canteen and kitchen was built on the grounds of the Santa Maria high school and vocational school. The furniture was made with help from the woodworking and carpentry students.

The canteen provides a good meal for all the students which helps them achieve their goals and finish their education.
