The Gambia Kids foundation has founded many schools in The Gambia. In Serrekuda, there were many visually challenged children who were unable to attend school and were roaming the streets or stuck at home. Unfortunately, the states doesn’t provide schooling for children with disabilities so these schools need private funding. That’s why there was only one school for visually challenged children in the area but, only children older than 9 were able to attend.

For that reason, the Gambia Kids foundation wanted to build a nursery school on the same grounds as the primary school. The nursery school is meant for children between the ages of 3 and 8. The foundation built two classrooms and one playroom, and each classroom has room for 15 children.

The school teaches a very varied curriculum and helps the children cope with their disabilities. Next to the regular program, they’re taught to use a cane for visual aid and they learn how to go about their daily lives outside and while playing sports and different activities. Furthermore, they are taught how to use a braille machine.

The children and teachers were extremely enthusiastic, finally they felt included.
